Work From Home, Part 2 – Jabber and Softphone Usage

March 24th, 2020

With the current emphasis on working from home and all the changes that incurs, maybe one of these questions is now suddenly more important to you than it used to be!

Today’s topic

  • How many folks are using Jabber or softphones?

Other pages this week:

Finding Jabber and softphone calls

Jabber calls are relatively easy to find. Try the simplest way first: put device_type="jabberdesktop" into your search filters. If you want both at once, try (device_type="jabberdesktop" OR device_type="softphone")

The field device_type is an amalgamation the app provides of all the device_type values on a particular leg, so in searches in both orig_device_type and dest_device_type. You could look for either of those (like orig_device_type="jabberdesktop") if you only wanted ones where the originating device was a jabberdesktop.

From here you can click on rows and dig into details, or follow along below to start generating reports.

Reporting on Jabber and softphone calls

ADDITION: Did you know we already have a way to do this? You should check out the *easy way to report on jabber calls* first!

From where you are in Browse Calls, click »graph calls over time in the upper right of the data/calls area.

Your search filters and numbers, or other parameters, will follow you over to General Report and by default it’ll start showing you a distinct count of calls over time of all calls that matched your criteria (in this case, jabber and possibly softephone calls).
For the below screenshot, I changed a few options:

  • I added the split by of device type,
  • changed it to sum the duration so I can see time spent,
  • changed the Chart Type to line
  • and changed the # of bins until I was happy with the result.

Maybe a column chart would have been better for this data, but I’m sure it gives you the idea. Feel free to change it to column with the Chart Type” dropdown.

One place to find more information is to search for fields in our field gallery!

Another great place is the following link for the Cisco documentation for CDR data.

Be sure to click on each of the menu items on the left – they each have information in them that’s useful!

Great software ultimately has to empower you to achieve more in less time. This extends to the company behind it -- we have to remember to always use your time as efficiently as we can.

And here I am happy to say that we shortened our Product Overview video dramatically. The new one is only 4 minutes long, vs 11 for the old one. You can see it here:

NOTE: the old one showed more of the product and was definitely more complete. In fact this was deliberate because we used it both for new users and also to be a deeper onboarding video for everyday users. However it was a bit too long for anyone who just wanted the short version and didnt want to spend 11 minutes of their day.
